Operation Skinny Jeans: February 2014

Friday, February 28, 2014

So yesterday I posted a side by side pic of me from my honeymoon, and in the same shirt yesterday.

I had this terrible affliction when I was at my highest weight called "denial". I would consistently wears shirts that didn't fit me. The good news I guess is that now all of my shirts STILL fit. SO thats a win I guess lol. I just recently had to start buying smaller sized shirts, but really all the old ones fit, just a bit baggy.

Anyhoo, this has given me the unique opportunity of inventing a new hashtag. #sameshirtdifferentgirl. Ok maybe I didn't invent it, and it has been used twice by randos, but it's not WIDELY used so I "coined" it. :D

Same shirt different girl basically is you take a picture wearing the same shirt you did in a before pic, and place them side by side. I think progress is most noticeable while wearing the same clothes, so that's how I want to compare :D

Here are some examples.

I am going to start taking more of these (for the shirts I haven't donated :/) and you should to! If you hoard clothes like I do, this shouldn't even be hard! Just put on the old shirt, snap a selfie (bonus points if its at work lol like mine always are) and hashtag #sameshirtdifferentgirl.

Who knows, maybe it will catch on.

Probably not.

Eh whatever. I just like progress pics! :D

ALSO! On Monday I am starting the 21 Day Fix! I can't wait to get started and share how it goes! Yes, I am taking a short break from P90X3, I just want to get my eating figured out and this is how I am gonna do it!

Have an awesome weekend!

Oh man guys.

Remember last week how I bitched about how I suck at meal planning? WELL Ginny at A Modern Commonplace Book is a problem solver. She emailed me sharing my sentiment, and had an idea for a better solution. Together we brainstormed, planned and tested, and over the last week or so, The "No Plan" Meal Plan was born :D

We are busy ladies. We don't have time to spend an hour plus every night cooking dinner. And with this plan, you don't have to! We had a few "non negotiable" when it came to the perfect plan!
  1. It HAD to be budget friendly. I want Beef Wellington for dinner every night as much as the next person, but I can't afford that. Keeping every week under 20 ingredients seemed like a really easy way to achieve this. PLUS I shared my extreme distaste for recipes with more than 5 ingredients. If it has more than 5 I stop reading. I am lazy. I want something easy.
  2. I wanted OPTIONS. I can't even tell you how many times I looked at the meal plans of yore and saw a dinner I wasn't in the mood for so we just ate out. I wanted options to pick from, not scheduled days.
  3. Same thing with time options! When I am tired after work I don't want to spend an hour plus on dinner. On those nights I want a 10 minute done meal.
  4. If you know how I eat, you know that having 3 food groups are important to me. I need a starch, protein and veggie for dinner. And the awesome thing is this will fit in great when I start the 21 Day Fix next week!
  5. I love finding recipes, but hate when it makes 8 servings! It's just me and my husband. And we love food! If there are 8 servings, I would bet you 6 of them get eaten between the two of us. Not only is more cost effective to cook for 2, but it is better for our portion control efforts. If you have more than 2, multiply :D math is fun!
  6. I conceded to one prep time on the weekends. Not my favorite act but it helps so much during the week. A necessary evil. Even better if everything is written out for me that I need to do.

So she took my demands in stride and we came up with what I think is the most genius meal plan ever.

You have 5 dinners laid out with different time options. There are also meat substitution options in there too. All the ingredients, recipe and grocery list (with prep list) are on ONE PAGE! You just have to print this one thing and it is your life! So easy!

So since Monday we have been trying these recipes out and they are all SO GOOD! The salsa has made an appearance on every lunch I have had this week, as well as the easiest pork recipe ever (that didn't make the cut this week).

I am so excited to share our brainchild and this awesomely easy solution to meal planning. If you try it out, LET US KNOW! We would love to hear from you! And every Thursday for the foreseeable future we will be sharing these on both A Modern Commonplace Book and here so you have Thursday- Sunday for shopping and prep :D

So there you go :D Enjoy!! Pin it if you want to :D

It's okay to be scared

The number one thing that gets in our way of pursuing our dreams (particularity our health and fitness dreams) is fear. We are paralyzed with fear and doubt and it holds us back.

For years I was terrified of working out. LITERALLY scared. I had seen The Biggest Loser okay! Those people were PUKING and CRYING! They were flying off the backs of treadmills and that was all in one day! I didn't want that! It looked painful and exhausting and unpleasant as hell!

You know this, but I wasn't a very active kid. I never played sports, I never ran for fun, and I certainly didn't EXERCISE. I couldn't even make it up the stairs in my condo without getting out of breath, there was NO WAY I could do that for an extended period of time. Here is a secret about me. I don't like pain. I will go out of my way to avoid it. And I really REALLY hate puking. So something that involves both is a big fat no for me.

So when I was perusing my local rec center's upcoming events, and I saw the "Commit to Fit" challenge, I was terrified! It was expensive and it involved working out. I shut the book and walked away. A few hours later I read through it again. I was CRAZY! I was going to FLY off the back of a treadmill with a shiny muscle-y guy YELLING at me in front of all these people! And it was going to HURT. Pain beyond my comprehension was going to happen. Nope nope nope!

But it kept NAGGING at me! What if this is what I needed? Why did I even look in this catalog anyway? I never had before. What if this is my chance to actually make a difference?

Long story short (too late, I know) I did it. I took the leap of faith and threw myself into the arms of an angry sweaty muscle-y man who yells. Then I woke up hahaha. My trainer Pete was not crazy and he didn't yell. He also had no clue how to train women, but that's beside the point. He made me realize the gym wasn't a torture chamber and that good things, positive things, can happen there! I learned that working out doesn't HURT.

My point is, FEAR is what is keeping you from your dreams. I was there too. But something inside of me NAGGED and I just couldn't let it keep nagging. Trusting myself and my ability to succeed, and trusting the support of those around me, I made it through. Don't be paralyzed by your fear. Embrace it. CHALLENGE it! Unless your fear is spiders, then fuck that :D

ALSO! March is coming up which means I am looking for a new post sponsor! See that banner down there for 9 to Fit? You can be there on the bottom of every post of mine! The catch? I need the virgin blood of your first born child. KIDDING! Nothing! No catch! First come first serve, you get 30 days totally free. Easy Peasy :D

And the winner is....

In a random turn of events, my Maybook giveaway ended last night and the winner has been notified! She has 24 hours to get ahold of me to claim her prize :D
But that's not what this post is about.

This post is about my favorite holiday. Oscar Sunday. Yep, the Academy Awards are a holiday in my house :D We make costumes and fill out ballots, it is a big to do. And the award season is upon us.

And as much as I would love to tell you what I am going to be wearing, I can't because it's a secret and my cousin  biggest competition reads my blog :D

I can tell you that for the first time I think ever my costume required sewing, and not just duct tape and hot glue. It is super cute and I think I might be able to actually wear it as an outfit in real life. We will see. it might be a little out there lol.

Another one of my favorite parts of the night is the menu! My aunt comes up with menu items based on the best picture award nominees.

For example:

ANYHOO the moral of the story is we are big ass dorks and I am excited!

I can't wait to share my costume with you next week!

Do you do anything for the Oscars? Or anything dorky like this? And by dorky I mean awesome.

Eat a sandwich!

OK I am the biggest liar ever.

I have a blogger buddy who looks hella fine and I am so freaking proud of her.  And a few times I have seen people comment on her progress pics "Eat a sandwich."

This is of course an idiom for "you are getting to skinny, eat something." and is offensive, to me.

Especially because I know she eats sandwiches. Lots of them!

And my point is that its rude to tell people to eat because they are too skinny

well that's actually not my point

It just popped into my head.

My POINT is that you need to eat to lose.

THIS is why I didn't blog today. My brain is all over the place. WELCOME to my ADHD hell :D (I legit have adhd. Fun fact)

Eating to lose- YES

Here's the thing. Your body runs on food. Duh. And you have a Base metabolic rate that your body NEEDS to function. It's different for everyone and it varies depending on your activity, but google it and find a calculator (or 7) and average out the results and go with that.

THAT is what your body needs to function.

When you eat LESS than that, your body goes into starvation mode.

Meaning when you eat, it hoards it all as fat because it doesn't trust you. It thinks you are going to keep starving it *which you probably are*

Mine is about 1850.

So when I was eating a diet of 1500 calories AND working out, my body was like " let me hoard all this food as fat for you because you are untrustworthy"

This is the part where you ladies who are eating 1200 calories and not losing should listen up.

The way you LOSE is by burning calories. You burn so that your calories in- bmr - burn is negative. get it? Say my bmr is 1850 (which it is roughly) so I eat 1850 - bmr of 1850 - 300 burned from x3, my deficit  is 300! If I have a deficit of 300 every day for a week, 300*7 is 2100 which is less than a lb. make sense? 3500 calories is a lb.

Wow that got mathy

POINT IS you have to eat your BMR. OR your body freaks out.

HENCE why my 21 day fix challengers are dropping MAJOR ELL BEES.

They are FINALLY feeding their body, so it is letting go. Proper nutrition is key. Feed your body and it will let go of the fat it has been hoarding because it doesn't trust you.

Here are the stats for those curious :D

My aunt sent me a card with this story on the front. It was in a completely different context, but it touched me.

The Starfish Story
Original story by Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach
when he noticed a boy picking something up
and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked,
 "What are you doing?"

The boy replied, "Throwing starfish back into
the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going
out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die."

"Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are
miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?
You can't make a difference!"

After listening politely, the boy bent down,
picked up another starfish, and threw it back
 into the surf.

Then smiling at the man, he said
"I made a difference for that one."

Her family had a girl from Ukraine as an exchange student, and that was the meaning for her behind this story, but it touched me in a completely different way. One she probably has no idea of. I am that boy.

I have this crazy notion that I can change the world. I have always been a dreamer and I have always felt like I had this higher purpose. I mean I don't think I am the next Steve Jobs or anything, but I have this passion and calling to help people. I feel incredibly blessed that my little slice of the internet is helping me achieve that goal, and that means the most to me, more than followers or page views or "likes". I could care less about the actual number for "status" reasons. But that number represents the number of people I have touched, the number of starfish I have thrown back into the ocean. And I am incredibly thankful for every single one of you giving me that opportunity.

I don't want to be internet famous. I don't live for notoriety or fame, I live for the message that says "because of you, I am changing my life."

I don't mind going one starfish at a time, and I don't mind walking those miles and miles of beach, because I know every life I touch is worth it.

And I am weeping.

TL;DR I love you guys :D

5 things I want so hard

First off- you guys are AMAZING! If anyone has ever wanted help deciding what was for dinner, check out the comments on yesterday's post! You could eat for a WHOLE YEAR based on those comments alone!

And my giveaway for a Maybook is still going on, so don't forget to check that out.

And this:
So far there are only 3 people entered, and I am capping it at 10, so your chances are pretty awesome to win. Just sayin :D

So this year, in an attempt to FINALLY get our finances under control, I took over and put us on a budget. So basically that means all the things I used to want (and then buy) I just have to lust over for now. So here is me, lusting.

1. THIS North Face hoodie.
Sports Authority
Ok lets be honest- ANY North Face jacket, but I love this one. I have wanted a North Face FOREVER! But they don't come in my size. The second I can zip one of these things up, I am dropping the dolla bills. I will probably make it rain on the cashier. Fact.

1. This Affirmat
Yes, I have a yoga mat. YES I know this mat is $66. I don't care. I want it. I want it so hard.

3. These.

Girl Scout Cookies
Lets just be honest here. I want all of these in my mouth right now. But I can't do that, so here I am, lusting.

4. Old Navy.

The whole store. Please and thank you.

5. My goal Tattoo

Not this exactly, but I am going to get a rhino on my hip bone area. I want it so bad I can taste it!

What are you lusting after these days?

Meal Planning......sucks

Don't forget to enter my Maybooks Giveaway! You don't even have to give up your first born, I promise!
And check out my Facebook page for a super easy way to win some gorgeous Stella and Dot!

OH yeah and I have a promo for my next 21 Day Fix challenge group you don't want to miss.
Phew! Now that we got THAT out of the way, blog time :D

Meal planning.

I mean it doesn't suck.

but I suck at it.

Let me just be honest for a second, I suck at FOOD in general. I suck at eating the right food, I suck at writing that food down, and I suck at planning so I DON'T eat the wrong food. I just suck.

I KNOW its easier when I do it.
I KNOW I eat better when I do it.
I KNOW I am more successful when I do it.

I just suck at it.

My husband and I have like 5 meals in our repertoire. We used to have a lot more before we started eating clean. But now that Hamburger Helper isn't a part of our lives (may he rest in peace) I can't seem to rack my brain for better ideas!

Yes I know pinterest exists.

Here is my thing with Pinterest recipes. They all require 7 THOUSAND ingredients. I want to use maybe 5. 5 is a good number for me.

So with all this we end up "meal planning" AT the grocery store ("so what do you want?" "I dunno, what do you want?"-THE WORST) and we end up with the same 5 meals we always eat, in repeat.
Something with steak and peppers
Grilled Chicken, boring style
Pork ala dull.

So I guess I am in need of a foodervention. I need to add fish into my life. I need to find more 5 ish ingredient recipes that I can actually make and that taste amazing. Then I need to WRITE THEM DOWN so I remember them the next time I am meal planning.

My question is, what works for you? Do you have a database of go to recipes you wanna share? A less than 7 thousand ingredient pinterest board I can follow? Wanna plan my meals for me? lol! kidding (not actually kidding, I would love you forever).

My little food journal!

I am terrible at tracking my food. My fitness pal, forget it. On paper, never gonna happen. I just suck at it.

But I know it's important and that I do better when I do it so in a last ditch effort, I turned to Maybooks.

I was first introduced to May Designs and Maybooks over a year ago when I won a giveaway from a blog I followed. I fell in love with the personalizable style and the plethora of different pages you could have in it, from calendars to wedding planners to baby books to food trackers, it was so customizable! Not to mention the adorable designs they have and how easy it was to make your own.

Seriously, go to their website and just play with the designer. You will fall in love.

Anyhoo so when I was looking for a way to actually stick to this whole food tracking business, I figured maybe something cute that I don't mind pulling out, and something small that would fit in my purse would be perfect. Enter Maybooks.

I started writing in it late last week and I have actually done pretty well at it! I have been surprised lol. I am excited to see how I do as I go along.

I love that there is a place for you to check off your water intake, and a place to write in what workout you did. It is really a fitness and health tracker as well as a food tracker.

And the fun part is that you can win one yourself, like I originally did! SCORE!

You don't have to like 7,000 pages or anything to win, just push the button.
a Rafflecopter giveaway

However, if you want to show some love, here are some links :D

And if you want to see more of me, those buttons in the top right hand corner will connect you with me all over the interwebz. :D

Good luck! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

*also- I was given a Maybook to review, but the thoughts and opinions are all my own. I will definitely tell you if I don't love something :D

I'm sorry Girl Scouts

As I am sure you are aware, it is Girl Scout Cookie season.

I hate it.

I just made this lol
Before you get mad or call me the grinch of cookies, hear me out.

I was a Girl Scout during one of the hardest times of my childhood. I will spare you the play by play, but my binge eating was born around that time, and something I could hide well enough to binge on was Girl Scout cookies. This continued annually from about age 6 till age 25. I would procure cookies secretly (legally) and sneak them into somewhere private, and eat all of them in one sitting.

It became so bad that I would drive from grocery store to grocery store LOOKING for the scouts so I could buy a box or 4 and eat all of them before I got home.

In years past, I have allowed myself to eat the cookies, feigning "moderation" and every time it would end with me sitting on the bathroom floor with thin mints shoved into my face as I weep silently as to not get caught.

So this year I decided no. I can't do it yet. So I am not even going to have one. Last week we drove up to the grocery store and into the parking lot, and I saw them there outside the store. I told Andy to keep going, that we would go to a different store. I know that sounds stupid, but as a former scout (and former leader) I literally can not say no to the girls. And before you call me a jerk for not at least donating money, I do donate money, just not to the girls with the cookies accosting me outside the grocery store. Because I will take a box and, well you know how that would end.

So for this year I am just saying no. or walking away without making eye contact.

Are there any foods that are like insta-triggers for you? My husband said that I can't eat just one serving of Girl Scout Cookies because to me a whole box is one serving. #truethat
