Yoga in the Streets

Happy Monday! Today is the last day of the Skinny Jean Fit Camp, so expect a wrap up post later this week with lots of before and after pics! Unfortunately I will not be doing another camp following this one. At this time I don't have the time or resources to put my whole heart into it, and I don't want to do anything half assed. However, Ash from A Step in the Right Direction and I are doing a Diet Bet and you should definitely join! It starts on October 7th and is only $20 to join. The pot is already up to $100 AND on the 9th, Ash and I will draw a person who we will refund their bet amount so you can potentially compete for free! How awesome is that!?

Anyhoo- I wanted to tell you all about Yoga in the Streets. Live Well Colorado closed down a busy street in Downtown Denver and set up rows of yoga mats for a lunchtime yoga session. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of downtown, there was an odd sense of calm and serenity on that street.

Too Legit to Quit

Thursdays are tough. On Wednesday nights, I host Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz and then I have to write a blog about it. And frankly writing two blogs in a 12 hour period really drains my brain for creative things to say. So today isn't going to be particularly insightful or anything like that.

A few updates: I finally got a link to the official news video that I posted a crappy cell phone taped version of on Monday. Here it is. www.thedenverchannel.com/lifestyle/health/local-womans-weight-loss-journey-and-blog-inspire-others

And the Yoga in the Streets event was awesome! It was such a fun thing to be a part of, and I can't wait to spill all about it next week (I am waiting on some official pictures so you can get the full effect :D )

On that note, I am sore as shit. If I am being honest, I haven't worked out HARD like that in months. Like probably 3 of them. I had a short stint with Jillian (more on that next week...) but she never made me sore, not like this. The best part of this soreness is that I know the best way to make it feel better is to keep working out. With my crossfit thing moved to Tomorrow rather than Saturday, I will keep this momentum going. I am excited to get back on track, and I think switching things up will help with that.

In other news, I am coming at you tomorrow with a fun giveaway and my thoughts on some at home resistance bands. Stay tuned :D

Sorry for the brain dump!

Yoga and CrossFit

As you know I love yoga. And as you probably gathered last month, I love LiveWell Colorado. This month, LiveWell Colorado is doing LiveWell @ Work, a whole month dedicated to making your workplace a healthier place to be. As a part of that, they are holding Workout Wednesdays downtown. On Wednesday (yes, tomorrow) they are shutting down Glenarm between 15th and 16th for Yoga in the Streets and I am going to be there! I was invited to participate and I am super excited!

I will be instagraming and live tweeting from the event, so feel free to follow along and if you are local or work downtown, feel free to come on down! It's a free event from 11:30am-1pm full of fun and fitness. :D

So CrossFit. I see it everywhere. There are literally little CrossFit places in every grocery store shopping center. I see them everywhere but I am not really sure what it is. One thing I do know is that it is scary as hell and I am no where near fit enough to do it.

Until now.

I was approached by Dick's Sporting Goods and invited to a local CrossFit demonstration event promoting a new line of at home CrossFit equipment, Rage Fitness. I told her that I have never done CrossFit and that it actually kinda scares the crap out of me, and she said that makes me even more perfect for this because the whole point of the event is to show people that normal people can do it, and that it isn't scary.

To be honest, I am a little scared. She did send me a run down of basic CrossFit moves, and none of them (except maybe a box jump) are outside of my physical capabilities (thank god) so I gladly accepted. At this event I will be a part of an hour long workout/ demonstration with a CrossFit trainer, then I will have a 1 on 1 with a trainer to come up with a workout for you guys, (and hopefully film a little video demonstration with them) and there might even be a giveaway involved (I am still working out the kinks). BUT I wanted to share this exciting news with you guys!

So if you are local and you want to come meet me, (and get an awesome CrossFit workout in, come down to the Dick's Sporting Goods in Broomfield (at the FlatIrons Mall) between 10am-12pm on Saturday the 28th and I will be there!

Lots of exciting workout stuff this week! Ever done CrossFit? Ever done Yoga in the middle of a street in downtown? tell me about it! Make sure to check back tomorrow for my highly anticipated return to Weigh in Wednesdays AND  big announcement that Ash from A Step in the Right Direction and I have for you!

That one time I was on the news...

If you guys remember, about a month ago I was on the local news about my blog. It was a crazy, weird, exciting experience and now that I have a video to show you (just me recording my tv on my phone #ghetto) I thought I would share.

In July, I saw that Live Well Colorado was doing a Get Moving Challenge and that they were looking for blogging ambassadors to write about their experience with the challenge. I thought that would be a great opportunity for me, so I jumped on it and was accepted. As the challenge got started, I made a connection with Caren, the woman who ran the blog ambassadors for the challenge. She asked me if I would be interested in doing some press for the challenge and I said sure, not sure exactly what that entailed.

A few weeks later, I got an email from a third party somebody about appearing on the local news in relation to the challenge. I was shocked and excited and of course said yes! It was another week or two until I heard from the producer about actually being on the news. All the info they gave me was that they wanted to meet me, talk about my blog and how I am getting active, and get a little b-roll of me working out. Sounded easy enough so I agreed. I got the email on a Thursday evening, we scheduled the interview for the next day, on Friday. (things move fast in the news world lol) So I cleaned my apartment vigorously, and called my Grandma so she could be there with me, and away we went.

The camera guy showed up right on time, was very nice and made me feel at ease. He just asked me questions, and prompted me to tell my story. I was very relaxed and not nervous at all. After about 30 minutes of talking, we went outside for me to run. He asked me to run out a ways then run back. (side note: I need a more supportive sports bra.... you will see. )

Then he thanked me for my time and left, and I just waited. About a week after they filmed me, I got an email saying I would be on the 5 O'clock news the next night. I still didnt know the nature of the story (I figured I would be like one of 5 or so blog ambassadors for the challenge in a story about the challenge) but I didn't know for sure. I was nervous! Nervous I would sound stupid, or look fat, or look stupid or something. I don't know. But when Anne Trujillo went into my story (after a story about fast food workers on strike for higher wages lol) I just held my breath.

My first thought was "um...... this story is just about me??? where are the other people??" and other than a terrible screen shot of my face while showing a shot of my computer, I was pleased. And surprised! And nervous and all sorts of emotions.

Immediately following the interview, I got a few new likes on facebook and a few messages that people had seen me on the news. I felt completely blessed that I was chosen for this kind of story. I am just a small town girl writing a little blog and I still feel like my grandma is the only person reading. I hope, that no matter where I go from here, that you guys know that I am still a small town girl writing to my grandma. I wont change. :D

Without further ado: the crappy cell phone recorded off a tv version of my News story!

I am not dead!

You're gonna hear me roar!

I have always loved music. I hear music in my soul and I really connect with lyrics. Listening to the radio has actually brought me to tears. Yes, I am a dork, but its just the way I am. I was brought up with music all around, and in our house listening to music was similar to watching tv. At night we would each get to pick a song, and we would put it in, sit in the dark and just LISTEN. I don't think people consume music this way too often now a days, but I can't resist just sitting and actually listening to a song.

Which brings me to Katy Perry's new song, Roar.

Juicing

I want to start juicing. Not like using steroids, but drinking fruit and veggie juice. Here's a fun fact about me. I have a hard time eating all the fruits and veggies I know I should. I don't know why, because I love fruits and veggies, I just can not for the life of me figure out how to fit it into my life.

Another year goes by

I seem to have this tradition. Every year on my birthday, I promise myself that I am going to make a change. To be a better me. To stop slacking off and FINALLY lose the weight. I made that promise last year, like always, and for some reason, it stuck. 25 was the only year I actually took that promise to heart and made the change.

I will be honest, because that is what I aim to be on here. The last few months have been rough. I have had so many things going on in my life that I have had a hard time managing both my life and my weight loss. I have maintained, if not lost a little, but the last 4 months have been a roller coaster.

But today, on the 26th anniversary of my birth, I am making that promise again. It's go time. I am re-committing to this process and I am ready to give it 110%. But in order to do that, I have to focus on me. I have realized that in the last 4 months, I have stopped putting myself anywhere close to first. At least not my health. And I fully believe that is the first step to success.

So here's to 26. The year I finally change my life.

Are you reflective on birthdays or is it just me?

Cupcakes- Party of 1!

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you saw that this weekend I had a nasty cupcake craving that just wouldn't quit. Rather than run to a local cupcake truck and eat all.the.cupcakes, I decided to make some. But not a whole dozen or two, because lawd knows I would have eaten all of them. I made 4. 2 for me, 2 for my husband. Yep, just 4. And even better, they were vegan :D Here is my recipe, as promised!

4 Chocolate Cupcakes Recipe: (modified from brettbara.com

6 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
3 teaspoons cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda (just eyeball half of a quarter-teaspoon and it will be fine)
1/8 teaspoon salt (otherwise known as a pinch)
4 tablespoons cold water
2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/8 teaspoon vanilla (ie, just a few drops)

2 tablespoon chocolate chips (optional, but seriously, add them if you have them.)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Whisk all the dry ingredients together in a small bowl (I did it by hand). Add the dry to the wet and keep whisking! Divide batter between four cupcake liners and sprinkle with chocolate chips. Bake for 20 minutes or until a tester comes out clean. Allow to cool before frosting.

SO easy. And no eggs! I will warn you, they weren't melt-in-your-mouth chocolatey but they were moist and yummy! I am still looking for that oooey gooey chocolate cupcake recipe, so if you have one, do share!
I obviously frosted them, but I wasn't planning on making them vegan (just noticed that they were lol) so my frosting wasn't vegan. BUT it would be easy enough to make it vegan so I will share both :D
Chocolate Chip Buttercream for 4 Cupcakes Recipe:
1/2 stick of softened butter (I microwave a stick for 10 seconds, then turn it over one turn and do 5   more seconds. Perfectly softened :D )
1 cup powdered sugar
a pinch of salt
1/4 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk or heavy cream
1/4 cup chocolate chips

Beat the butter (I did all of it by hand with a whisk) until it's smooth. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time and whisk it in. Now is a good time to switch to a spatula. I just used a spoon to get all the goodness out of the whisk. Add in the salt, vanilla and half of the cream/ milk and stir stir stir. If it is still too thick, add more cream. Once it is where you want it, fold in the chocolate chips. Sadly it won't pipe very well (I tried) but it is so yummy and really since you only made 4, no one is going to see it so just spread it on and enjoy :D

To make it vegan, use shortening instead of butter, and almond milk or something instead of cream. To make it more buttery tasting, you can get vegan butter "extract" flavoring, but it will taste pretty much the same without it.

You can obviously cut it in half and make just 2.

Here is why I think it's okay that I am teaching you how to make cupcakes on a "weight loss" blog. Depriving yourself is BAD. And I know that for me if I don't satisfy a craving like that, it will go horribly wrong. I don't eat cupcakes very often, like once every 3-4 months, but when I want them, holy hell I want them. Which is OKAY. The real lesson here is portion control. 2 cupcakes isn't going to kill me or throw me off. It just isn't. In fact, probably just the opposite. It keeps me on the right track. Sure, this isn't a particularly healthy recipe, but hell it's delicious!

So be mad if you want to, but if you think self deprivation is the way to long term weight loss success, we don't agree. And I am okay with that.

Breakfast Faves

On Wednesday nights, I have to write another blog for my gig as a Bar Trivia host, so Thursday posts are always hard for me. I was sharing my posts from the Live Well Colorado Get Movin Challenge, but now that that is over, I am going to have to get more creative. I was up until Midnight blogging for the other thing last night, so this post is brought to you by laziness :D

I was reading my daily blogs when I saw Skinny Meg was having a breakfast food link up! Sounds easy enough, I am gonna join that!

Before a workout, I almost always eat a piece of wheat toast with peanut butter and half a banana. I had no clue that Skinny Meg ate that too, so I feel way more validated in that decision. :D

After a workout, around 8-9am I have breakfast! My go-to's are oatmeal and yogurt and granola.

I like to use old fashioned oats and make them on the stove according to the package, and I add a tablespoon of Hemp Hearts and Chia Seeds to each bowl. A little bit of honey, a pinch of salt and I am in oatmeal heaven :D

For yogurt I take plain greek and add strawberries and blueberries, and a light drizzle of honey. If you find plain greek yogurt to be too bitter, try the vanilla kind.

I am pretty boring so I don't really switch up my breakfasts.

What do you normally have for breakfast? Anything that is super awesome that I just have to try?

Ah, the internet

Fun story. As you probably know, I was featured on the local news last week. (yes I am still working on getting a video of it. If I don't have one by the end of the week, I will legitimately record it on my phone from my tv). Some fun things have happened because of that.

1. I got a few new Facebook followers. Welcome!

2. I realized how big of a twitter deadbeat I am, and I am working on fixing that. Thanks guys!

3. I met Jenny.

"Who is Jenny?"  you are probably asking. Jenny is my new bff. She messaged me on Facebook after seeing my story on the news while at the gym. She is a nutritionist and in school to become a personal trainer, and I love her. We met last night at a Starbucks (did I mention she lives like 15 minutes from me) and we totally hit it off! She gave me nutrition counseling and we just talked like old girl friends which was great. She said something funny that I totally agree with. When she saw my story, she just knew she had to reach out to me, and when I got her message, I felt the same thing. I had no qualms about meeting a complete stranger that I met on the internet at a Starbucks because I just knew she want going to try to kill me :D

Anyhoo, sometimes the internet is this beautiful thing. I am a very social person in real life, but some of the most meaningful relationships I have built have been on the internet. I can't wait to get to pick Jenny's brain and see where this new friendship takes us. And I want to let you all know that if you have ever thought "gosh, I really want to email Jess but I don't want to bug her!" or "I live in Colorado too and I think it would be awesome to get coffee sometime" EMAIL ME!  Or Facebook me or whatever! I would love to meet you, talk to you, run a mud run with you in just over a month! Anything, all the things, seriously. You all inspire me every day, so I love to hear from you :D

Some September Goals

It's been a few months since I have made monthly goals, but I am ready to get back on track with that. With only 4 months left to go, I want to make the most of time we have left in 2013. So I am making a few goals this month.
