This is TMI and if you dont want to know, walk away now.

I have an issue and I want to pick your brains.

But its TMI

So I am telling you to walk away now.

Dont say I didn't warn you.

Because I did.

Ok here it is.

I started eating super clean, and I am having a hard time pooping.

I used to be a really good pooper. Like the envy of my friends. 3 a day, no issues, it felt awesome.

NOW I can't poop to save my life. I will go 4-5 days without a healthy poop and it is killing me! My stomach hurts, I feel bloated, like its all building up in there. I have tried teas, Miralax, eating veggies that promote poop, drinking my weight in water (which I do already), adding lemon to my water, drinking prune juice, etc. NOTHING is doing the trick. I think because I have cut like 99% of the fat from my diet, that is part of the problem. The only thing that helps is taking a hard core laxative but it hurts my stomach SO FREAKING BAD and it always "works its magic" at 3 am and I hate it. I really do. But I am getting desperate.

Hence my asking you.

Because this shit (pun intended) is embarrassing.

and frustrating.

Please help me!

  1. I did the 10 cleanse skinny meg sells, can't think of the name right now...same thing happened to me and I felt awful. Your body needs a little fat in its diet trust me. Last year I did a hard core clean eating session for about six weeks and my I ended up going to the dr because (didn't realize at the time it was diet related) I was sleeping horribly, felt sluggish, and was always kind of cloudy thinking. After labs and tests we discovered my "super healthy diet" was the problem, I was eating almost no fat and my body couldn't handle it. No joke, I ate a huge meal of pasta and felt better than I had in ages! Lol. Pasta is not the answer but I do believe we need some good fats in our diet to function properly. - Katie

  5. I'm just like you. The pooper "goes on vacation" constantly. For me, I find that having a cup of coffee in the morning gets things moving most days. First thing I do, up and have a coffee and then breakfast. I know how you feel though, because it's FRUSTRATING.

  6. I had this same problem for years every time I would eat healthy. It was very discouraging because it caused MAJOR bloating in my belly and bad bad gas (sorry but it's true)....I tried every fiber supplement, drinking lots of water, all that stuff.....what I discovered is that I have a very difficult time digesting things. The worst was concentrated protein. Like Soy Protein Isolate, or whey protein. Also, hard to digest things like corn, beans, even brown rice (if I had too much of it) gave me trouble. I have learned to just steer clear of any concentrated proteins and only have a very very little bit of hard to digest things each day. Even raw veggies would do it to me....not as bad as the other things though. I hope you find out what it is for you. It's noooo fun!!! --Eves

  7. Apple Cider Vinegar helps too. I mix mine with lemon. I've also read that you need to drink it warm.

  8. I take fiber capsules twice a day to keep regular while eating clean and healthy. If I didn't I end up being in the same boat :(

  9. Eat rye bread. Does wonders for me. I eat two slices for breakfast, with some cheese. An hour later.... I hope this helps for you!

  10. no bueno :( So I too have this problem (once being the envy of my friends as well), First try adding Metamucil every morning, but in the mean time try an infant (or adult dose-if you think you can handle it) suppository. Pop that bad boy in the plowmans entrance and you should have the desired results in under an hour! Then the Metamucil can do it's work from the top down...

    2. I laughed OUT LOUD at work at the "Plowmans Entrance" bit LOL

But you are right. It might be the solution, at least for now.

  11. I would try the fiber tablets as suggested already. How long did you try the Miralax for? You have to use that for sometimes 3-4 days before it starts working and then continue taking it regularly.

  12. Coffee? I heard that coffee is a laxative, and my co-worker has a coffee mug that says "Coffee makes me poop." LOL
Hope things get going for you soon. I think being constipated is one of the worst feelings!

    1. Coffee is a natural diruetic, whenever I have some, it definitely helps. You could also take Colace - I had to take it twice a day during both of my pregnancies. I would also suggest taking a probiotic. You can buy shelf stable ones at any drugstore. Also, if you're really having a problem, drinking milk of magnesia will work usually within an hour or two. It's like liquid chalk, but it does the trick!

  13. Cranberry juice is a good one for these type of things. I had this problem when I started clean eating a while back and it worked for me. Hope some of these help with the poop issue!

  14. Coffee and probiotics have always been my go to. Good luck!

  15. Fat is a good thing, so maybe add back in some. Chia seeds could help. Raspberries and blueberries. Cut out bananas and apples. I also wouldn't eat anything like rice, not even brown. Especially not brown rice, in fact--it blows me up like a balloon and I can't eat it at all. I've stopped eating beans, too.

Oooh, another thing is magnesium supplements. Taking those helps me too.

  16. I take metamucil on the daily, girl! Maximum daily dose. It helps. Promise.

  17. I alternate taking docusate sodium caps and Miralax powdered stuff every other day or so. Nothing else works for me - adding more fiber through diet, probiotics, etc. I have to take the meds.

  18. Just found your blog not long ago since I've been on a weight loss journey myslef over the last year..
You NEED to eat more fat! Fat will not make you fat, eating too much will make you fat. Eat more good and healthy fats every single day, multiple times a day (think avocado, olive and coconut oil, coconut flakes, some salmon, full fat dairy, some nuts...etc). You'd be amazed at how much fat you really need to maintain a healthy gut flora...which equals a settled stomach and good poops! I've had the same problem as you for a long time. As soon as I switched to eating a paleo/primal lifestyle, no more troubles at all, totally gone. Also think about taking a probiotic if necessary. (culterelle is good). Anyway, sorry to rant about fat, but eating "clean" in no way means cutting out fats and lots of protein. I follow this site a lot. Tons of good articles, ways of eating and a lifestyle to maintain forever and ever. I have no affiliation with it, it's just one of my go-to's since I've changed my eating habits (and I've lost 50lbs to boot!)

  19. I had the EXACT same problem. When I started eating clean I was having some real constipation problems. Which seemed weird because I drink sooo much water and really focus on my fiber intake. People warned me that I was maybe getting too much fiber, because that can cause constipation. Or the other thing I have been warned about is eating too much cheese, or Tums, which both can have a constipating effect. The one thing that I have found to work is Kefir yogurt. It's a probiotic yogurt and it works wonders. Activia did very little for me, but Kefir has proven to be the lucky charm!

  20. I vote for add more fat into your diet. Fat is an essential nutrient! DON'T add more fiber. Fruits and veggies already have a ton of fiber, so clearly you don't need more fiber. Plus (warning for my own TMI story) I visited my in-laws this weekend who eat lots of really bad, fatty foods and now I'm having loose poos. :( Just try to find a balance between fats and fiber, and make sure you have good fats. :) You also may need to continue to use a laxative until you get regulated again. You don't want that poo to keep building up in there!

  21. Fiber, fiber, fiber!! Also it takes time for your digestive system to adjust! Maybe after another week or so (with added fiber) will help!!

  22. Do you have a trader joes in your area? They have this tomato/red pepper soup that is AMAZING. Im not a huge fan of regular tomato soup but this is great. Target also has a version but a little more pricy. I end up eating two bowlfuls at night and I have no problem in the bathroom the next day :-P

  23. I already commented here (my go to is rye bread), but I'd like to add something. A lot of the commenters here suggest adding supplements like fiber tablets and metamucil. I myself am of the opinion that you should try to get everything out of your diet first, before going to supplements. (Of course, if you have some sort of deficiency, it might be unavoidable, also I am not a doctor). So I would first try some foods/drinks that naturally help the digestion, such as my suggestion of rye bread or the fruits and juices other commenters suggested.

  24. I couldn't get past you pooping 3x a day o_O. But there is great advice above!

  25. I would second the suggestions for taking or drinking a probiotic! (I like to drink 8oz of the yogurt kind). I was always super regular but now that I'm super pregnant it's like...oh my god this never happens anymore! Even through the pregnancy process, the probiotic works. Also...I find that eating meat binds me right up. My body just wasn't meant to deal with it! A lot of "clean eating" programs go heavy on the meat consumption, and that might be some of the problem (if it is a change from previous eating patterns).

  26. I get this way alot too. Fiber does not work well on my belly...actually seems to make all worse. Try an anti-gas supplement..like Beano. Another one: don't know why these work-Strawberry wafers. the long rectangle cookies, 2 or 3 do a trick for me. take your multi-vitamins, eat nuts and avocados! Eat your healthy fats or you won't lose weight. Shakeology will help, too. Once your body adjusts, you'll be back up and going!
