Workout Wednesday- Yoga

I don't think I have told you how much I love yoga.

Now I am going to :D

I love yoga. Yoga was one of the first physical activities I ever tried (outside of gym class). I took a class at the rec center in my town when I was still in High School, and I fell in love. I finally felt athletic! I have never been athletic in my life. I never ran the mile in school, I never did well in gym class (picked last at dodgeball, etc). So when yoga made me feel that way, I was hooked.

Yoga and I took a break for a few around 5 years because of school and general laziness, but now that I have rediscovered it, I feel the same way. Yoga is the best total body workout I have ever gotten. You use muscles you would never think you use. You have to concentrate and breathe through the discomfort and there is a huge level of self reflection in yoga. You have to face your flaws head on, and you have to be stronger than you think you are. I have learned more about myself while trying not to fall out of downward facing dog than I have doing anything else.

"But I don't know where to start! I don't have a gym near me where I can take a class! I am too embarrassed to take a class!" etc.

Have no fear.

Group yoga is fantastic. The energy in the room is great and the instructor is really your ally. They will move you into the right posture, and also make you push yourself further. BUT if you aren't ready to venture into classroom yoga, there are lots of ways to do yoga at home.

First- I love PopSugar. It's one of my favorite websites. One of it's sections is "FitSugar" and a couple days ago they shared beginner yoga poses. I followed the workout and it was great to get back to the basics and focus on form. So if you are looking for somewhere to start, thats what I recommend. It even includes pictures :D You can also look on youtube for yoga videos.

So I encourage you to yoga this week. Any way you can. Your body and mind will thank you :D

  5. I like yoga a lot too. Not doing much of it these days - only about once a week. I started doing it 10 years ago after having twins - it really helped get me toned and helped manage stress.
