Don't do it.

76% of binges are caused by stress (completely made up statistic by me). I don't know if thats true but I know that when I am stressed, I am more likely to binge. Boredom is the other 26% in my opinion.

There is an entire category of food designed to make you "feel better" when you are stressed. We call it "Comfort Food". Foods high in carbs, fat and cheese are marketed to make you think they can help you. These are the foods we turn to when we are in emotional pain.

The good news is, cookies aren't the only way to ease your pain. There are lots of things you can do to manage stress that don't involve your mouth.

1. Shake it out
Put on some good dance music and dance until you cry, or feel better. Dancing lets you release tension and work out your frustration in a constructive way. Plus, it's fun and is likely to make you smile.

2. Watch a funny movie
Laughing is actually scientifically proven to improve not only your mood, but your health. Take a few deep breaths and get prepared to laugh until you cry. You will feel the stress melting away.

3. Work out
If you have ever seen Legally Blonde, you know exercise releases endorphins, and endorphins make you happy. (And happy people just don't kill their husbands) point being, not only will you feel like a rock star for not binging, you will feel happier because of endorphins.

4. Go shopping
Ever hear of retail therapy? Shopping for women is like hunting for men (weird but true). When we find a killer deal, or a really great outfit, it makes us feel like we killed something. That rush of excitement and pride can make your stress go away. (Unless you are stressed about money or your shopping addiction, then I don't recommend this one...)

5. Meet your girlfriends for happy hour
This is a great alternative for a couple reasons. You get to hear about their drama, which may put yours into perspective, and make you feel better. You get to spend time with people who you feel comfortable around and make you happy. And there is alcohol involved. And while I don't recommend drinking your stress away (that's bad), a glass of wine or a cocktail will make you feel relaxed. Sometimes that's all you need :)

So there you go. 5 binge busters for emotional situations. You aren't always in control of the stress in your life, but you are in control of how you react to it. I promise you a binge will make you feel worse in the long run.

  1. I know from personal experience that laughter is really good medicine. When I was stressed so much that I was about to start pulling my hair out and eat a box of cookies, I'd turn the funniest movies from youtube and laugh away the misery. Laughing feels a lot better than 1000 calories. Esther Norine Designs

  2. Between my iPhone and the elliptical, we have beaten some binges. The music takes my mind off the stress and I can sweat it out. Definitely makes me feel better.
