Drink Like a Skinny Bitch

When most people diet, they don't take into account the number of calories in alcohol. Even tho it is clear like water, it is not calorie free like water ;)

While alcohol has calories, what really kills you is what you mix it with! So be careful about creamy drinks, or really sweet drinks, and try to ask for diet cola when you have a rum and coke.

Here are some bad examples.

Pina Colada (6 oz) - 378 Cal

Chocolate Martini (4 oz) - 438 Cal (eek!!)

Long Island Ice Tea (8 oz) - 780 Cal (HOLY CRAP)

Margarita (8 oz) - 280 Cal

A night out with the girls can easily turn into a road block. Sure Chocolate Martinis are delicious, but are they worth the calories?

Here are some better choices.

Gin and Tonic (7 oz) - 200 Cal

Tom Collins (8 oz) - 122 Cal

Bloody Mary (5 oz) - 188 Cal

Appletini (4 oz) - 210 Cal

So next time you go out, you don't have to worry about not having fun, as long as you are prepared. And even tho 200 calories is better than 800 for a drink, remember you are drinking your calories and they will add up fast. :) Maybe plan a work out session that morning to offset :)

What are your favorite drinks? Any on the list?

Weigh In Wednesday- 2-27

Yay it's Weigh In Wednesday! I love this link up and getting to see how all the inspiring ladies that link up with us did this week!

I had a few family get together this weekend so there was some off plan eating and drinking involved, but that's life.  I will always have family events or something else to take me off plan, and I will pick back up where I left off and keep going :)

My Commit to Fit program is coming to an end. We are in the middle of week 6 out of 8. I have learned a ton from my personal trainer and I will definitely miss the ass kicking that boot camp gives me. But I have a long term plan. I think the most important part of this program is making it last. I am learning how to work out and how to be fit and I definitely plan to keep it up. My husband and I looking at gyms to join after this is done so we can continue to work out on a regular basis. I love yoga so I definitely plan to continue that! And the lady who runs my bootcamp does a similar class once a week at the rec center that I might go to. I like Zumba too so I definitely want to try that.

Anyhoo point being that my program is almost done and I am looking forward life after that and really putting these skills I have learned to the test.

Bring on the weights!

Alex: 300.1 (-1.1) (-2.8)

SO CLOSE to 299.9! We have until Friday to hit our goals! :)

Jess: 250.5 (-0.6) (-35.1)

I am also so close to my goal of 249.9! I need to eat better these two days and I think I will be there by Friday!

And don't forget we link up with Alex and Erin every week! Click through and check out how the other ladies are doing this week!

Sky High

I love high heels.

I think they are chic and sexy and feminine and can make any outfit fabulous. That being said I can't wear them. Nope.

Not only do I have chubby feet (#fatgirlproblems), I have terrible balance, and weak leg muscles so I can't walk in them either.

I am hoping that by losing weight and strengthening my leg muscles all that will be in the past and I can rock sky high heels like the best of them. In the mean time, I can drool over them on the internet.

Target $30

Truth or Dare $130

Jessica Simpson $90

Seychelles $95

Guess $50

Jessica Simpson $100

These babies make my heart go pitter patter. Especially those Guess wedges and the Betsy Johnson nude spiky pumps. Be still my heart.

Which ones are your favorite? Do you love heels as much as I do?

Sneaky Little Calorie Burners

For as long as people have been wanting to lose weight, they've been secretly hoping to find some magical cure-all, a way to lose the weight without diet or exercise.

While diet and exercise are key to losing weight, thankfully, there are ways to burn calories without hitting the treadmill or popping in a Zumba video (though you'll definitely burn a lot more if you do those things!). Granted, these things aren't meant to take the place of exercise, but are instead meant to supplement them.

These are things you might not even really consider exercise. Some are even things you do every day!

Loading the dishwasher burns 105 calories every half hour. I don't know about you, but it never takes me that long to load the dishwasher. Washing dishes by hand takes longer though, and burns more calories (160 calories/30 minutes). Assuming you wash dishes for half an hour every other day, that burns 29,200 calories in a year. That's almost 8.5 pounds! How crazy is that? So go grab those rubber gloves, grab your sponge, and get scrubbing!

Spring is coming up, and I'm sure some of you are excited to get gardening (I know I am -- I'm so excited to finally start a kitchen garden this year!). And I have good news for you gardeners -- gardening burns 256 calories per hour! Less than 14 hours in the garden will burn off a pound, and there's a good chance you'll be out there a lot more than that.

Mowing the Yard
If you're one of those brave people who still use a push mower (and seriously, I applaud you -- the last time I tried to do it I couldn't), take heart -- you burn 160 calories for every half hour you mow and  work your arms, legs, and core!

It's not an every day activity, but is sure does burn calories! I actually posted something about this on our Facebook page yesterday, which ended up inspiring this post. I'm in the process of painting our living room, and while doing so, I noted how sore my muscles were, especially my biceps and delts. It's definitely a workout (for your arm, anyway, lol). It burns 288 calories an hour, so I burned over 1,000 calories just working on a couple of walls!

Half an hour of sex burns 85 calories.  This doesn't sound like much, but it adds up.

     1 time a week = 1.2lb/year
     2 times a week = 2.5lbs/year
     3 times a week = 3.8lbs/year
     4 times a week = 5lbs/year
     5 times a week = 10lbs/year
5+ times a week = Dang! Get it girrrrrl!

And if you go for an hour instead of 30 minutes? Even at just one time a week, you're burning almost 2.5lbs a year just by having sex. Not a bad deal, eh?

Some people really hate vacuuming, and some people find it to be therapeutic (I fall in the latter category). Whether you love it or hate it, it burns calories! If you vacuum your floors for half an hour twice a week, you can burn off almost 2.5 pounds a year. If that's not incentive to get your floors clean, I don't know what is!

What's your favorite secret calorie burner?

Keep Calm, It's Monday 2-25

Fitspiration Friday: Measure Up!

If you have ever been stuck at a plateau, you know that the scale is not the only measure of weight loss.  As you may already know, muscle weighs more than fat, so when you are in the process of converting fat into muscle, you may not see a change in number, but you will see a change in your size. This brings me to measurements.

At the start of any weight loss efforts, it is important to take your body measurements! As you are losing, you will not only be losing fat, but gaining muscle. And while a number on the scale might be changing, the most obvious change you will see is how your clothes fit. This is why you measure :)

"But what should I measure and how do I measure it?" you might ask. Well that is a very good question :) You can measure just about everything, but not everything will necessarily lose inches as you lose weight. I have found the most effective places to track are your neck, chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves, bi-ceps and forearms. I don't always do calves and forearms, but for Commit to Fit they have and I have actually seen a difference there too!

To take a your measurements, take a soft tape measure around the area, and bring it together and there you go! Make sure you stay level and that you don't pull too tight. Here is a great article if you need more specific details.

Basically when the scale is stuck, pick up a tape measure and see where you're at. :)

How to: Home Gym

I love going to the gym. It is fun and there is lots of different equipment to choose from.

But I also love working out at home. I love the convenience, especially when I want to work out after work but don't feel like leaving the house! I also bet there are lots of moms out there who don't have the time or ability to go to a gym. Which is why I think it's a good idea to have some equipment at home to help you out :)

1. Bosu ball $110 @ Target Bosu balls are spendy, but they are so versatile! It is definitely an investment in your home gym that will pay off!

2. Gaiam Radiance Red Yoga Mat $20 @ Target I personally own this yoga mat and I love it! I love that it is sticky so it says in place, and it isn't stretchy so it keeps me stabilized. "But I don't do yoga!" you might say. Well I use this baby for sit-ups, push-ups and any other activity where you want a defined space or a little extra padding.

3. GoFit Pro Stability Ball (55cm) $30 @ Target  Stability balls are awesome. This one even has pictures on it of activities you can use it for. One of the first lessons Pete my trainer taught me that the size of the ball does matter! (you bet I snickered at that one lol. #13yearoldboyproblems ) You want to make sure you get the right size for your height. Follow this simple chart. I am in the 55cm category.

under 4’10″ 16″ or 42cm
4’11″ – 5’4″ 21″ or 55cm

5’5″ – 5’11′ 25″ or 65cm
6′ and taller 29″ or 75cm

4. Reebok Hex Weight 10lb $13 @ Target  I love these hand weights. They come in cute, fun colors, and they are also hex shaped which I need. I use hand weights to take the strain off my wrist when I do push ups, and I need a flat side to stay stable. So these are multifunctional in my work out. Get whatever weight you think you will use the most, or you can get a few different weights if you need to. I mostly use 12 lb weights, but Target's website didn't have them.

5. GoFit Ultimate Rubber Medicine Ball 10lb $45 @ Sports Authority You can also get these at Target, but for some reason they didn't have 10 lbs on their site, so yeah. Medicine balls are really cool, and I prefer these rubberized ones to the squishy ones for a few reasons. Rubber balls bounce, so you can use the bounce to your advantage. In boot camp, we throw them against the wall, and if you had a basement (or a wall you don't mind throwing a 10 lb ball against) you can do that too! Or you can throw it in the air, play catch with a partner or use it to do squats with. A great way to add weight to any exercise.

So there you have it! My 5 essential pieces to any home gym! I can't wait to start putting mine together.

Do you have gym equipment at home? Any pieces you recommend, or don't?

On Monday I set a goal to be active today and I have a plan to do that! I looked at the classes offered at the Rec and nothing there works so I am going to do the 52 Card Sweat out again! I am excited because that was a lot of fun, and such a good work out. I love a workout I can do at home that gets me sweaty! :) If you know of any fun home work outs that you love, send them my way!

Alright- time for the weigh in!!

Alex- 301.2 (-1.2) (-1.7)

The 30 pound difference

I am so excited to say that I have finally hit a milestone- 30 lbs :)

Sure I hit it a few weeks ago, but I am in need of a little inspiration so I thought I would look back and look at the differences between then and now :)

When I started my weight loss journey, I was 285.5 lbs. I was uncomfortable in my skin, wearing undershirts to hide the fact my pants weren't buttoned and I hated the way I looked and felt.

Bring on the pictures!

I am wearing the exact same outfit (you can even see the paint splatters on the pants lol)

Bring on the list! Aside from the obvious by looking at me, I feel different for sure!
  1. My stomach doesn't stick out past my boobs. And when I sit down, I don't have it in my lap as much. I still have a tummy, for sure, but it is a lot smaller :)
  2. My chest (not necessarily my boobs, buy my chest area) is smaller. When I would lie on my back, my chest would almost suffocate me. Now I can lay down flat and breathe!
  3. I only have two chins instead of 4! Sweet!
  4. I can go up a flight of stairs without feeling like I am dying.
  5. I fit more comfortably in movie theatre seats.
  6. This one is TMI so if you are related to me, stop reading. Sex is way better. Told you TMI but true.
  7. Everything on me is smaller, arms, boobs, thighs, but oddly my hair is exactly the same length.
I need to remind myself to look at these photos and remember how far I have come when I am struggling. It is a marathon, not a sprint, and I am in this for the long haul. It is important to look at how far you have come with just as much weight as how far you have to go. Looking ahead is daunting. Looking behind is rewarding. Ok enough fortune cookie crap lol.

I can't wait to write another one of these 30 lbs from now to tell you how much better I feel then!

Also, speaking of this being a marathon, and to tie into my goals I set yesterday , I need to make more short term goals. With that, I am making the goal to get out of the 250's by March 1. I have been in here too long (almost 2 months) and so it is time to say goodbye. I have been hovering around 254 for a couple weeks so I want to kick ass these next two and say goodbye to the 250's with February!

How far have you come? Setting any goals to reach by March 1st? Has your hair not changed in months? lol

Clean Up Your Kitchen -- Homemade Apple Chips

We haven't shared as many recipes here on OSJ as we would like, so I thought I'd borrow a ridiculously easy, completely clean recipe from my personal blog, Good Girl Gone Wife. I first posted this recipe in July, shortly after my father-in-law was diagnosed with diabetes. He's been known to snack on sweets, and I wanted to give him something sweet that was better for him than a fun-size Snickers.

And it seriously is ridiculously easy. All you need is apples, and cinnamon if you like. I like to add cinnamon -- it makes it seem more dessert-like to me.

All you really need to do is dehydrate the apples. If you have a dehydrator, fabulous! You can use it. But if you don't (like me), you can use an oven,  preheated to 225F.

Peel your apples. Coring is optional (if you don't core them, they'll need to cook a little longer), but of course, you'll need to remove the seeds.

Once they're peeled (and maybe cored), slice the apples horizontally. A mandolin makes this easier, but it's not necessary. I don't have one, so mine were a little thicker, so they just needed a little more time in the oven. When they're sliced, put them on a cookie sheet (I lined mine with foil for easy cleanup).

If you want cinnamon (and you know you do!), now is the time to sprinkle on your desired amount.

Bake 2-3 hours, or until the edges start to curl up. Flip them over after one hour. I recommend keeping the oven door cracked a bit to let the moisture. When they're done, you have some super tasty apple chips! They're crispy, but some of the thicker ones are more chewy, but they're still good -- the thicker, chewy ones remind me of a baked apple.

Easy, clean, delicious, and guilt-free! It doesn't get much better than that!

What is your favorite guilt-free snack?

Keep Calm, It's Monday 2-18

Happy Monday friends! It's that time again, when Katie at Hear Mte Roar - thecarbmonster  joins us in hosting our weekly link party!

Rules are simple- No rules :) Link up anything! Posts you are proud of, your blog for us to follow, pictures of your puppy, anything! Keep us awake this Monday!

This week I am going to post my weekly goals. I have been bad about making super short term goals for the week, so I am starting now!

Eat at least 5 servings of fruits or veggies a day! I need more green in my life!

No boxed foods. If I buy it in a box (and add water, or anything else to make it real looking) I will not be eating it.

Do something on Wednesday! My original work out plan included Wednesdays, but they have kinda turned into another rest day which feels really lazy. I am checking out the schedule at the gym to maybe take a class Wednesday nights!

So there you go! Wanna share yours? Do it in the comments! Link your blog up to! We want to follow you!

Fitspiration Friday- Motivation

I don't know about you, but I need some inspiration! Lets refocus and kick ass this next week! Make the weekend count!
