Work it out

"I know you go to the gym frequently, but what do you do? How do you work out" - someone, I'm sure.

If you are anything like me, you are clueless about what to do in the gym. There is all this equipment that you don't know how to use, and usually skinny people on them, and its intimidating for sure. I am going to start by saying that I am by no means an expert. No one has ever told me what to do in a gym or how to work out so I keep it very basic :)

So here is what I do :)

First I do cardio. I get on the treadmill and find a pace that is a slightly uncomfortable walking pace, and a decent jogging pace at the same time. This way I don't have to change the pace once I get going. I walk for 1:30, then jog for :30. I find this pace keeps my heart beat up and gets me sweating. I go at this for 10-15 min. Its not a ton of time doing cardio, but it is better than nothing, and hey, I'm working my way up.

After the treadmill, I go for the free weights. I am currently using 5lb, because I am doing reps. I start standing with my hands and do a bicep curl. Like this:

I do 10 of these, then immediately go into overhead presses, also 10.

Then I go into these things (fly like a birds?)

Then I do standing pec flys, like this but my legs look normal, not like that…

I do that whole thing again, 10 times each movement, and by then my arms feel like they are going to fall off.

Then I put a knee on the bench press bench and do 10 of these
Then I do 10 of these:

Then repeat the last one and this one again, on each side (20 reps of each total)

THEN I sit down :) And I do 10 of these on each side, twice

Then, while sitting, I punch the air with the weights, counting to 20 like *left*right*1* Sorry no cutesy pic for this one.

Then I stand up again, and lower the hand weights down, squat and lift them into an overhead press, 10 times.

Then I hold the weights by my shoulders and squat 10 more times.

Then I repeat the other squat then this one again :)

Almost done! Abs!

I do 10 of each of these

Then

Then

Then

Then

then finally

Phew!

Lastly, 30 second plank :)

Then I'm done! I totally feel up to another round of cardio at that point, but I have to be home for dinner so I usually jog/walk home (about a 1/4 mile). I hope that this helps you when you go to the gym. Again I just want to stress that I am not a trainer and that I am in no shape to give medical advise. This is just what I do :)

So what do you do at the gym? Anything you love? Anything you hate?

*Fine print time! It took me so long to compile the photos that I totally spaced getting sources. If its yours, let me know and I will link it back to you, otherwise, SORRY! :)

  1. Wow that's pretty intense for your arms! Maybe consider doing a few moves then switching back to cardio for five mins, then back to weights... I'm no trainer either but I love to do short spurts of cardio between reps!

    1. I always like to see other people's routines. It gives me good ideas of things to add to my own and you have several that I need to add to my routine. Thanks for sharing.... BTW don't forget your legs!... Also I just found this really awesome book at my thrift store called The Biggest Loser Fitness Pogram. I I love this book because it has some great workout tips and then it has sections that shows excercises and proper form for warming-up, upper body, core, lower body, and cool down. Then it gives you put together work-out routines in the back from Beginner to Advanced. It has helped me to add variation to my routine. Just a good book I wanted to share.

    2. Oh thanks!!! I'll def check that out I love new exercises too! Yes I think I work my legs and core more than arms because mostly I just hate most arm exercises. Plus I have a collarbone injury I have to be careful not to reinjure :/ but I totally love lunges (I'm weird and LIKE them) and squats... :)).

    3. That book sounds awesome! I will check it out too. I like squats, but lunges really hurt my knees. Hopefully that will change with time :)
