Fitspiration Friday- DIY vs Buy

Lets face it, convenience is important. Convenience is the reason why dinner stopped being grown and started being heated. While trying to eat clean and be healthy this presents a problem. There are so many convenience foods that we just buy because its easier, or we don't know how EASY it is to make them ourselves. When you make your own food, you know exactly what is in it, and exactly how clean it really is :)

So we have compiled 5 must have convenience foods that we challenge you to DIY vs BUY :)

1. Corn Tortillas- I love Corn Tortillas, especially when they are super soft and fresh. Sadly 99% of the ones you buy at the store arent. They are dry and crumble easily. No good. It is so easy to make Corn Tortillas that it is practically against the law in Mexico to buy them ;) Feel free to scour Pinterest to find a recipe that fits your fancy, but I like this one :)

2. Ranch Dressing- Who doesn't love Ranch Dressing? I love Ranch on everything, from veggies to salad, to pizza :) For something that seems so simple, it sure does have a lot of unpronounceable words on the bottle :/ I love that this clean version is not only easy to make, it looks fabulous :)

3. Granola- Why do we buy granola? And why is it so freaking expensive? If you look at it, it just looks like oats and nuts roasted with maybe some sugar. Fed up with spending up to $6 a lb for organic granola, I decided that it can't be that hard to make :) This recipe only has 5 ingredients!

4. American Cheese- Is there anything more delicious than grilled cheese? I love american cheese, but does anyone really know what is in it? Processed Cheese Product? Ew. But now with this recipe that surprisingly looks pretty easy, you can have all the melty cheesy goodness without the words "processed" and "product" attached.

5. Fruit Roll Up- Do you have kids? Are you still a kid at heart? Just like dried fruit leather? Me too (to the last two hehe) This fruit roll up recipe only has 2 ingredients, and even tho they don't have tattoos or fun shapes cut into them, they are completely clean and easy to make!

Ever made any convenience foods at home? Any of these sound particularly great? What is your favorite convenience food?

  1. I always make our own granola, only because the store bought kind is soooo expensive and making it at home is super easy! I've made our own chewy granola bars (delish) and wheat thins before too (very good, but cutting out tiny squares and baking tons of trays of them ended up being more work than it was worth to me). Love your ideas!

    1. Good to know! I was thinking about trying the wheat thins but it sounds like a pain.

What recipe do you use for granola and granola bars? I would love to try them! :)

  2. Gahhh I wish I had seen this before I spent $8 on Granola, it didn't even cross my mind to make it and I love finding recipes on pintrest gosh I am so stupid sometimes.
I will have to give it a go next time!!
    Love Gi
