10 Reasons To Eat More Bananas

Bananas are a really awesome food, and I think everyone should eat more of them. Here are ten reasons why I think you (yes, YOU!) should be eating more of these yellow tropical bits of goodness.

1.) Bananas are (in most areas) super cheap. My normal grocery store regularly has them for under $0.50 a pound. So even on the tightest budget, you can fit bananas onto your shopping list. This is one food where the whole "it's more expensive to eat healthily" thing (which I generally agree with) doesn't apply :)

2.) Bananas are super portable. I can't tell you how often I grab a banana or two to eat in the car on the way to work. They require no preparation and can be eaten anywhere. Bananas (and Larabars) have been great for me remedying my lack of breakfast.

3.) Bananas help you have better poops (and yes, I seriously just said that). They're a natural treatment for constipation (and if anyone loves a good natural treatment, it's me).

4.) Bananas have a wonderful natural sweetness, so they're a great, healthy option for those of us who love our sweets! Frozen bananas can be made into an ice cream-like treat, slices can be topped with cinnamon and honey...heck, even plain they're delicious!

5.) Bananas help reduce stomach acid and help soothe ulcers, which is awesome for me, since I feel like my whole life is stomach acid.

6.) Bananas are great sources of potassium and iron.

7.) Bananas help quell nausea, which is super awesome if you're pregnant (or flu-ridden).

8.) If you're a smoker looking to quit, bananas can help you! The B6, B12, potassium, and magnesium help you recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

9.) Bananas can help balance your blood sugar, have lots of fiber, and can keep you from overeating, so they're great for those of us trying to lose weight!

10.) Bananas make a great pre- or post-workout snack. The carbs in bananas help give you good, natural energy, and are a great alternative to caffeine, because you avoid the crash that often accompanies caffeine consumption.

So there you have it...ten reasons to eat bananas!

What is you favorite way to eat a banana? I think mine is in a smoothie (or plain!).

  1. Bananas are so healthy but I do not enjoy eating them. Bananas are too mushy for me. I'll eat them out of necessity not because I like them. Esther Norine Designs

    1. I like to get green bananas and eat them when they're just the lightest shade of green (like, as they're transitioning to yellow). They're firmer and they aren't as sweet.

  2. OK, so maybe this isn't the *healthiest* way to eat a banana but... When I've got to have something sweet I slice up a whole banana and then put a small, very small, scoop of vanilla ice cream on top with a big sprinkle of cinnamon. It's delicious and way better for me than chocolate, cookies or a big o' bowl of ice cream.

    1. I LOVE peanut butter and bananas! It's one of my favorite sandwiches, and it's even better grilled/on toast. All you need is a nice big glass of milk to wash it down!
